Judith Joy Ross' Recent Works: "The Devil Today and Reading to Dogs", Meditations on Nature and Protest

(guest blog post by Charles Elliott) Armen and I had the pleasure this week of viewing Judith Joy Ross’ latest exhibition of photographs at Pace/MacGill Gallery, “The Devil Today and Reading to Dogs”, her first exhibition of works in color, presenting thirteen large-scale archival pigment ink prints. For some accustomed to Ross’ black and white portraiture, this work will seem at first to be a significant departure. Yet, the work familiarly evinces Ross’ sensitivity to the human condition and her keen focus on current social and political concerns. In this series of works, we see children at play in a dappled sunlit wooded setting of a wildlife rehabilitation center (“Aark Foundation”) and photographs depicting close bonds between people and animals. These photographs are exhibited with images of protestors opposing hydraulic fracturing and projects such as the controversial Keystone XL pipeline and the proposed construction of electric transmission lines cutting through the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.

While this may be Judith Ross’ first foray into color photography, the use of color serves her well here, bringing a vivid elemental immediacy appropriate for the urgent concerns within her point of view.

“Reading to Dogs” explores human relationships with nature: a young boy, his face alight with the joy and pride of holding in his arms a rabbit swaddled as though an infant; a young woman face to face with an alpaca, her hands lightly embracing the alpaca’s long neck in a loving gesture; a farming family in rural Pennsylvania, with a woman lying down, embracing a piglet, her thighs mud-caked, embedded in the earthen natural world.

“The Devil Today”, with its imagery of citizen activists, depicts the all-too-few voices of protest against the most current versions of exploitation and spoliation of natural resources. In one image, we see Lehigh-Pocono Committee of Concern (LEPOCO) protestors lined up along a roadway in a location that, at first glance, is seemingly remote. A small detail – a sign pointing to the location of a “Governor’s Event” – reveal the protestors to be precisely positioned to address a very specific audience: Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett, elected with the help of campaign contributions from supporters of the state’s burgeoning natural gas industry. In another, we see the calm courage of a young woman waiting to speak to the Delaware River Basin Commission in opposition to water withdrawal permits for “hydrofracking.”

“The Devil Today” and “Reading to Dogs” might be seen as two separate bodies of work. Indeed, they are explicitly not juxtaposed, but exhibited separately within Pace/MacGill’s intimate gallery space. Yet the exhibition presents a single coherent vision. Its emotional power is gathered from the potent poignancy which the works on each side of the gallery lend to the other: on one side, the protesting voices that seek to protect the increasingly fragile web of connections between people and the natural world, visually described with such sensitivity in the other. In one, we see those who stand against -- in Gary Snyder’s clear-eyed poetic phrase -- “the work of wrecking the world” and in the other, what we stand to lose.

Alex & Leslie's Armenian Wedding at St Vartan's Cathedral in NYC

What a treat to end the year with this extraordinary wedding! Alex and Leslie were married in the same magnificent cathedral where I was wed. Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, the Primate of the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church in North America, performed the ceremony.

St. Vartan Cathedral is the first cathedral of the Armenian Apostolic Church to be constructed in North America. Its architectural plan is patterned after the 4th-century church of St. Hripsime in Armenia, and includes two distinctive features of Armenian Church architecture. The first is the use of the double-intersecting arches to span the interior space, eliminating the need for columns. The second is its pyramidal dome, soaring 120 feet above street level and supported by the intersecting arches.

You may remember Leslie and Alex from their Central Park engagement session. Their wedding day was filled with dancing, beginning with the groom's preparation for the ceremony. Guests from California, Arizona, Texas, Massachusetts and a dozen other states as well as Australia and Canada attended.

From Cabin to Castle-Engagement Session at Fonthill

It's always a pleasure to drive down to beautiful Bucks County, so when Anne and Chris suggested Fonthill Castle for their engagement session I was excited at the prospect. It was the first time we'd met and I learned that these two romantics had their first date at the Sunset Grille and talked way past 4AM. It sounded like the dawn of a romance at the Sunset Grille. (I just couldn't resist).

I 'm looking forward to photographing their wedding at Aldie Mansion next July.

The Young People's Philharmonic at Allentown Symphony Hall

This past Sunday I had the pleasure of once again taking photographs backstage with the very talented and delightful young musicians of The Lehigh Valley Young People's Philharmonic and Junior String Philharmonic. Jerry and Nancy Bidlack have been giving children the opportunity to participate in this challenging orchestra for over 30 years. Even after years of observing the Bidlacks at work, their patience and dedication to the education of young musicians still amazes me. There are no easy adaptations or arrangements of classical pieces played here -- just "unadulterated classics."

With its mountaintop vistas and fabulous food prepared by Executive Chef Michael Pichetto, it's one of my favorite venues in Easton.

Beauty Draws Her Beasts

I just had to share this photo of Philadelphia artist, Gina Deluca. She seems to be tangled up in tentacles and tendrils standing in front of her large scale (6 1/2 feet by 4 feet) vivid charcoal drawing of two writhing octopii. The work is entitled "Hectoctylus" for its reference to the single arm of a male octopus which, she tells me, has reproductive capacity.

Her charcoal rendering of large ostriches also conveys a sense of chaotic motion, with bird feathers literally flying!

I wish Gina good luck as she embarks on her new life adventure in Chicago.

Central Park Engagement Session

Alex and Leslie first met in Washington D.C. but it wasn't until years later when their paths crossed again in NYC that sparks flew. Since Leslie lives in Manhattan, Bethesda Terrace in Central Park was the natural choice for their engagement session.
To really understand what Central Park means to the City, pick up a copy of Central Park: An American Masterpiece, by my friend, photographer and official park historian, Sara Cedar Miller. It's filled with fascinating facts and images of the park.

Arriving at 72nd Street on the afternoon of the photo shoot, I asked a dignified-looking gentleman to point me in the direction of Bethesda Fountain and he kindly offered to walk me to my destination. In conversation, I discovered that he was related to Frederick Law Olmstead the landscape architect who designed Central Park along with his senior partner, Calvert Vaux! I considered this to be a good luck omen.
Alex and Leslie were a delight to work with. Here are a few of my favorites from our one-hour photo session before they had to rush off to an engagement party for close friends at The Central Park Boathouse.

Beach Wedding in Ocean City, Maryland

Julie used to ride the bus to elementary school with the "red haired little boy". In high school, they just happened to sign up for the same trip to Greece and when they returned, Cody (the red haired boy) asked her out on a date. They've been together ever since. Cody graduated college with a degree in environmental studies and Julie is an art teacher/artist who created the hairpieces and jewelry and has an online Etsy shop.
The Ocean City beach was a favorite family vacation spot and holds special meaning for Julie's family.

During a pre wedding photo shoot, our attempt at finding a secluded spot on the beach was first interrupted by rookie lifeguards who were in training and then by a Washington DC news reporter covering the beach beat! At least Julie and Cody got their minute of fame on the 11 o'clock news that night.

Cody carries one of his two adorable nieces who served as flower girls.

I saw authentic rapture in Matthew's eyes on his wedding day and it was exclusively reserved for Sara. It's the kind of "heaven on earth" feeling you get when you've found the other half of your heart. It was very clear that these two felt the same way about each other. They not only had found true love for themselves but also for Matt's sister, Lisa, and his best man, Jesse. Matt and Sara introduced Jesse and Lisa to each other. They soon married and now have an adorable, red haired little girl.

Greetings Blog Viewers!

We've taken control of Armen's blog for a brief post while she is off climbing Mt. Everest and scuba diving in Cyprus. Actually, she's preparing for her Ocean City beach wedding.

Anyway, we are her two-week interns, Eliza and Julia. Armen has allowed us to work with her as part of our final project before graduating high school. During our two week internship, Armen has been showing us the keys to studio portraiture, editing, post-processing, and seeing through a photographer's eyes. In addition, she has given us tattoos (fake ones of course) to get in the mood for Julia's photo-documentary of tattoo parlors. She also taught us how to play the dulcimer and the secret to whistling at previously inconceivable decibels.

On our second day with Armen, we spent the morning photographing each other using her studio set-up, basking in the glory of being both model and photographer while Armen coached and edited photos from her weekend wedding. We were so inspired that Armen thought we could take our modeling to a new level, and she bestowed upon us the sacred fan and backlight, as you can see in our photos. The afternoon was devoted to more portraits using various lenses, editing and post-processing techniques.

Jacqueline & Steve (Easton, Pennsylvania)

If Jackie and Steve, both pharmacists, could bottle the chemistry between them they'd make millions!

This iconic image incorporating classical ionic columns was a perfect setting for the groom whose Greek ancestors came from Cyprus.

Jacqueline and Steve were married at Our Lady of Mercy Church on south side Easton, Pennsylvania.

The reception was held on Steve's grandmother's property in Palmer Township.

Steve's buddies surprised the couple with fireworks to end their wedding day.

This past weekend was another fun photographic adventure with Nicole and Greg, two adorable high school sweethearts, who'll be getting married next year at the Brookside Country Club.

For most guys, coming to an engagement shoot is an act of faith. I can guess how the conversation goes: "Honey, I don't know what I'm supposed to do but if you really want me to...I guess I will." After explaining what I'm looking for, there's usually great relief and an exclamation of "Oh, so you want us to ignore you!?" After that it's easy, because I've always felt that authentic interactions and emotions make the best photographs.

A Cavallo's Wedding Feast in Easton, PA

Meryl and Lee were married in the presence of family and friends by Allentown's Mayor Ed Pawlowski at Cavallo's in Easton. Wedding guests were treated to a unique "slow food" culinary adventure orchestrated by accomplished chef Shirley Cavallo. Guests enjoy food that is local, organic, free-range and made from scratch. Cavallo's has been a well-kept secret in the Lehigh Valley for thirty years and is situated on 100 acres along Delaware Drive just outside of Easton. Here is a NY Times Review of Cavallo's.

Bossert Baby Bonnet: Newborn Baby Photo Session

When this sweet 14-day old infant floated into my studio on the arm of her daddy, sporting a Nancy Bossert original, I knew she'd steal my heart. She was pretty patient with us. The infant-adult ratio was just about right...one infant to three adults. After years of experience I know babies can't be rushed and that keeping the studio toasty for her comfort is a top priority.

Zoe Keating at Le Poisson Rouge on Bleecker Street

It was pouring buckets Sunday night but inside Le Poisson Rouge, cellist Zoe Keating's rare appearance on the East Coast packed the house.

Her mesmerizing compositions of looping and layered musical textures for electric cello kept us all transfixed. "Escape Artist" and "Optimist" from her newest album, Into the Trees, were among my favorites. At the end, she played an improvisational duet with the opening performer, the wonderful violinist Todd Reynolds, a longtime member of Bang On A Can, Steve Reich and Musicians and an early member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project. The concert was live web-cast by Q2 and tweeted by @Q2music and @wnycradiolab.

Winter Wedding at The Stroudsmoor Inn

It must have been the luck of the Irish that was responsible for dodging the winter storms that arrived just days before and after Jim and Laura's wedding in the Poconos.

After their ceremony at St. Anthony's in Easton and a visit to Porter's Pub, they made their way through the lovely wintery landscape best admired from inside Woodsgate's windows.

With fireplaces aglow.... good food and music, the dancing and merriment continued long into the night with many guests staying overnight.

Paris Pt. 2-Inspiration from Paris to Pennsylvania

After going to the European Photography Centre and seeing the outstanding work of Mimo Jodice, Michael van Graffenried, Antoine Poupel, Phillippe Perrin and Servulo Esmeraldo, we headed over to the two retrospectives I was really looking forward to. . . Lisette Model and Willy Ronis.

Lisette Model's incredible work was on view at Jeu de Paume. Lisette Model is one of the twentieth century's most significant photographers. After seeing the show, I saw the very clear influence she had on Lehigh Valley's Larry Fink's work, (one of her more famous students along with Diane Arbus).

I thoroughly enjoyed the retrospective of Willy Ronis' work at the Monnaie de Paris. He was the last of a generation of French photographers who were central to the medium's development during the 20th Century. Like his contemporaries Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Doisneau and Brassai, Ronis showed tender expressiveness while chronicling the romantic vision of Paris now firmly lodged in the public imagination. I was absolutely delighted to discover several years earlier that my close friend in Easton, Nan Ronis, is a relative of this incredible French photographer!

We were lucky enough to be in Paris during 'open studio' night at Les Frigos, part of the underground art scene.

Les Frigos used to be a cold storage warehouse and is one of those mythical places in Paris that is definitely off the beaten path. Since the 1980s, large numbers of artists have squatted in this large building on the banks of the Seine and the building has become synonymous with art, rebellious spirit, and creativity. After years of trying to expel its tenants, the mairie of Paris bought the building to insure that the artists could stay and create. -- jazz musicians, painters, sculptures, photographers, videographers and craftsmen. (See the nine photos below.)

Back in the United States, Mass MoCa (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art) is another example of industrial space that's been converted into gallery space, professional offices, retail shops and restaurants. My daughter, who first introduced us to this wonderful museum years ago, just began an internship here during her winter term. (See the eight photos below)

Reading, Pennsylvania's Goggleworks is yet another wonderful example of the reuse of industrial space. It used to be an eyewear factory and now houses artists' studios, gallery space, retail shops and a film theater. (See the photo below).

The next four photos below are of Easton, PA's Silk Mill Project. The development and reuse of buildings at The Easton Silk Mill is an exciting project in the beginning phase. This summer, "Movies at the Mill" was attended by over one thousand people!

Films were projected on the exterior wall at the Silk Mill in Easton right after dusk.

A reception was held inside one of the 13 buildings on site after the movie screenings ended.

The inspiring, Oscar Award-winning film "Music by Prudence" was introduced by its director, Roger Ross Williams, an Easton native!

Once again this year, animated shorts by Magik World were among my favorites.

I'm looking forward to more exciting developments in the City of Easton in the new year!

Paris Part 1: Tower to Tombs

My husband and I went to Paris to retrieve my daughter after her year studying at the Sorbonne. We rented a flat near the Saint-Martin Canal and used the Métro and buses to explore the city (much easier when your daughter is your personal tour guide).

I got "the Eiffel Tower that ate Paris" effect when I used my 17mm wide angle lens.

I loved the curved, well-worn wooden staircase in our apartment building, polished by centuries of use.

One of the first places we visited was the Centre Pompidou, which houses the Bibliothèque publique d'information, a vast public library, the Musée National d'Art Moderne which is the largest museum for modern art in Europe, and IRCAM, a music and acoustic research center.

This Métro subway entrance is a whimsical example of Paris' wonderful public art.

This bridge is a famous spot for lovers who leave locks with their initials engraved on them.

La Cartoucherie is a complex of five theaters (Théâtre du Soleil, Théâtre de l'Aquarium, Théâtre de la Tempête, Théâtre de l'Epée de Bois, and the Théâtre du Chaudron) in a former munitions factory. It lures both cast and spectators into an intimate theatrical world. The resident director is the revered Ariane Mnouchkine. Go early for a simple meal; actors often help serve "in character."

Eglise St-Etienne-du-Mont in Paris is an attractive Gothic church with some unique features inside and out. Its construction spanned more than a century -- between 1492 and 1626. The church was once part of an abbey dedicated to the patroness of Paris (St. Genevieve).


At Paris' City Hall, we saw the photo-documentary project "Dignity", based on a global campaign by Amnesty International (Demand Dignity). The project focuses on the centrality of human rights in the fight against poverty, with photographs by Phillippe Brault, Guillaume Herbaut, Jean Francois Joly, Johann Rousselot, and Michael Zumstein.

The exhibit depicted five stories illustrating basic fundamental rights: land, identity, housing, health and safety, in India, Macedonia, Nigeria, Egypt and Mexico.

We walked among the graves of Pere Lachaise, one of the most famous cemeteries in the world. It is reputed to be the world's most-visited cemetery, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors annually to the graves of those who have enhanced French life over the past 200 years, including Edith Piaf, Frederic Chopin, Marcel Proust, Oscar Wilde, Maria Callas -- and the Doors' Jim Morrison.

Fresh flowers are placed daily on the composer Chopin's grave by lovers of his music, even 160 years after his death.

YPP Holiday Concert at Allentown Symphony Hall

This past weekend I had the pleasure of hanging out during dress rehearsal with the talented members of the Lehigh Valley's Young People's Philharmonic and Junior String Philharmonic. For over thirty years Nancy and Jerry Bidlack have encouraged aspiring young musicians across the Lehigh Valley.

Having set up YPP's website several years ago while serving on its Board, I make it a point to attend the holiday concert and update the website photos each year. The children change so much from year to year and it's fun to see them changing from middle school through the end of high school.

Tra-my and John had perfect weather for their wedding day. They were married in Bethlehem at Messiah Lutheran Church and the reception was held at The Candlelight Center in Bethlehem Township. This lovely bride and groom were showered with colorful rose petals as they left the Church and made their way to their limousine.

Family members travel from all parts of the country to get together for the holidays and it's a perfect time to get a photo of the entire crew. I had photographed the children of this growing bi-coastal family about ten years ago, as a surprise gift for their parents. They were just as much fun to work with this time, too!

Emmet, the latest, greatest addition to the family, was incredibly cooperative and adorable.

I was delighted when Trish called me to recreate a family photo I had taken over ten years ago. The last time this lively family was in my studio for photos, the girls were in Pre-K! The youngest is now a high school senior and her lucky older sister is in London for a semester.

The women in this family are all talented in the areas of theater,

Lovely Wedding at Historic Hotel Bethlehem

I was lucky enough to be the photographer at Dani and Brad's beautiful Lebanese wedding which took place earlier this year. Preparations began at her sister's house in Forks Township and the ceremony took place in Easton at Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church. The celebration then continued long into the night at The Hotel Bethlehem.

The bride and groom were lifted onto shoulders during the first dance above the cheering crowd which tossed dollars and clapped for the newlyweds. The closeness of their family and the sense of community that surrounded this couple throughout the reception was heartwarming to see.

Engagement session in and around Easton

It's always fun to introduce people to some of Easton's most scenic spots. Sarah and Keith are engaged to be married next year at The Riverview Country Club and enjoyed walking around Lafayette College's campus for their photo session. We drove past Easton's Farmer's Market and down to the Delaware Canal Park where I showed them the shad migration fish ladder and the recently restored towpath (great for biking, which Keith was excited about). I told them that it goes on for miles and that the only way I can be coaxed onto it is with a promise that we'll stop at The Riegelsville Inn for lunch.

A Lovely Fall Wedding at Riverview Country Club

Riverview Country Club's dramatically landscaped villa changes with each season, making it difficult to decide which is my favorite. Here are a few images from my latest wedding:

Preparations began at The Grand Eastonian Suites Hotel where the bride and her attendants were treated like celebrities by the talented team from Suddenly Samantha, who did their hair and makeup. (That's Tara putting on the final touches).

The architecture and space was magnificent and the indirect lighting from the huge window was perfect.

Jennifer looked like a princess perched on the windowsill.

I love capturing the intensity of the moments just before the ceremony begins.

Jennifer and Andrew were such a sweet and easy-going couple and so much fun to work with!!!

Jennifer took off these fantastic, funky shoes and danced late into the night!

Autumn is the perfect time for engagement photo sessions. When this Eagle Scout and his fiance suggested their favorite state park in New Jersey, I jumped at the chance.

The scenery was stunning and they were in their element.

Playfulness and complete trust is what these two have in each other.

Autumn Wedding at Burnside Plantation

Edith wanted a wedding on the edge. On the edge of two ecosystems, that is, or "ecotones". An ecotone is the space created by the meeting of the two ecosystems, where you find not only the plants and animals of each ecosystem but additional species uniquely adapted to the conditions created by the meeting of the two. In this place, you find an unexpected abundance of life. Their lives meet at the edge of two worlds: Edith's interest in the natural world and food equity, and Philip's work in architecture and the arts.

The historic buildings at Burnside Plantation evoke an era long past and give you a feeling of timelessness. The natural setting with its orchard, gardens and trees appealed to the bride.

After their ceremony at Grace Episcopal Church in Allentown, Pennsylvania the couple sped off in a sporty convertible decorated with fluttering white balloons.

It was only fitting that the bridal party was photographed surrounded by willow trees; after all, one of Edith's three academic degrees is in forestry.

The couple will be living in Boston where Phillip completed a building project expansion at The Museum of Fine Arts and is currently working on a project at The Clark Museum in Williamstown, MA.
